Although the Obama Administration’s decision to stop defending the federal law that bans the recognition of same-sex marriage is a step in the right direction for gay couples, the move will have little immediate effect. Groups on both sides of the issue will continue to challenge the the legal rights of gay couples, and eventually a ruling will have to be made in the higher courts.

Prof. Rosenblum says, “There’s going to be at least a couple of years of litigation over this, and sooner or later the Supreme Court is going to have to weigh in.”
