Prof. Bennett Gershman quoted in WAMC article, “Debate over funeral protests now at state, local level.”

Prof. Bennett Gershman offered his opinion to WAMC on the recently past New York State Senate bill regarding protests outside military funerals.  The new bill, which aims to build off of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling protecting the right to protest at funerals, calls for a 500 foot buffer zone for protests at military funerals, the receipt of a permit to protest, and the posting of a public security bond, ranging from $5,000 and up, which would be refunded if protesters complied with regulations issued within the permit.

Prof. Gershman’s only concern is whether or not the new bill seeks to to single out certain outspoken groups, for example, the Westboro Baptist Church.
