Prof. Mushlin talks to WAMC public radio about a prisoner’s rights to a heart transplant

Prof. Michael Mushlin, an expert of prisons and prison reform, was interviewed by WAMC public radio about an inmate at a correctional facility in Greene County, NY who needed a heart transplant.

Mushlin said that to deny the inmate necessary medical care is a violation of the Eighth Amendment.

“If the government is deliberately indifferent to a serious medical need, then that can cause suffering to a person–and even death to a person–that isn’t part of the criminal sentence,” he said.
