The American Bar Association Law Practice Management Section (LPM) has announced that Gary A. Munneke, Professor of Law at Pace Law School, in White Plains, New York, and former Chair of LPM, was selected to receive the Samuel S. Smith Award for excellence in law practice management.
The Award, named in honor of the late Samuel S. Smith, a founding member and early chair of the Section, who later became ABA Treasurer, is presented annually to a recipient who has made outstanding contributions to the law practice management field. Professor Munneke will be honored at a reception during the ABA/LPM Annual Meeting, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on Friday, August 5, 2011.
Through his writing, speaking and teaching, Professor Munneke advocates providing a practical education for students and training for lawyers to prepare them for achieving excellence in the practice of law. He has authored twenty books, including the leading casebook on law practice management, Materials and Cases on Law Practice Management, 3rd Edition (West, a division of Thomson Reuters), and over fifty articles on topics relating to the practice of law, the future of the legal profession and legal careers. He is also a regular speaker at programs and courses on these subjects. Professor Munneke’s dedication extends to his involvement in both the American Bar Association, where he is a former member of the ABA Board of Governors, and the New York State Bar Association, where he chairs the Law Practice Management Committee and is actively involved in assisting members to practice more effectively.
After learning of his achievement, Professor Munneke commented that he hopes to continue to emphasize the importance of law practice management to the legal profession: “Although I am thrilled to have been selected for the Sam Smith Award, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the countless individuals who have contributed to the movement to assist lawyers to practice more professionally and competently by managing their law practices more effectively.”
