Prof. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. discusses Massey Coal Company

In a recent interview with The Huffington Post Prof. Robert Kennedy, Jr shared his thoughts on the much maligned Massey Coal Company. Several organizations, in tandem with Professor Kennedy, have called for “Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden to decharter Massey Energy.” When asked about the movement Professor Kennedy explained that “It’s our position that when a company abuses its charter, that the attorney general has the responsibility in the state where it’s chartered, to revoke that charter.”

Massey Energy has a long history of violating the Clean Water Act (63,000 times between 2006 and 2010) and their CEO has admitted that “Massey could not operate profitably in the marketplace without breaking the law.” The company also has a history of safety violations, leading to the death of 29 minors in the Upper Big Branch mine disaster in 2010.

Kennedy went on to state that Massey practices mountain top removal, refered to them as a “criminal enterprise,” and  explained that their CEO has a long history of pro business congresional leaders.
