Those ubiquitous plastic bags are making news as another town in Westchester County votes to ban their use. Professor Lin Harmon, Assistant Dean and Director of Environmental Law Programs, commented on the effectiveness of such tactics in curbing the environmental impact of the bags routinely distributed by grocery stores and other merchants.
Asked by “The Journal News” if such local initiatives are effective, Prof. Harmon commented: “Where the problem arises is often where the solution is found, and sometimes it spreads to a much wider area,” Harmon said. “On the local level, people take pride in their communities and don’t want plastic bags lying around. In larger political jurisdictions, the problems become more diffused.”
