Prof. Linda Fentiman comments on the implications of Michael Jackson’s doctor receiving the maximum sentence

Michael Jackson’s personal doctor, Conrad Murray, received the maximum sentence in the pop singer’s death this week, as well as a scolding from the judge for “violating his Hippocratic oath and engaging in ‘money-for-medicine madness,'” according to the Associated Press.

Prof. Linda Fentiman commented in the AP’s coverage of the sentencing that the case “will not scare away doctors from taking in celebrity patients. But it may give doctors some leverage with patients who insist on getting their way.”

“I’m not sure celebrities can be deterred from trying to get what they want, but a doctor might be able to resist their pleas by saying, ‘I don’t want to end up like Conrad Murray,'” she said.
